Spirit of Speyside 2009 (autumn session)
Written by Claudio on 06/10/2009“Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown on seven distilleries”; this is the welcome that you can read entering in the little town of Dufftown, the capital of Malt Whisky, the beating heart of the Speyside.
On 25th-29th of September we took part to the Spirit of Speyside, the whisky festival of Speyside. This festival has a principal edition at the beginning of May, but for the fourth time it is proposed – in a shorter version – also at the beginning of autumn.
During the festival it was possible:
- To participate to guided tastings or to visit distilleries, which are normally closed to the public.
- To explore the matches between whisky and foods such as salmon, cheese, chocolate and with the assistance of famous whisky experts.
- To have dinner in Dufftown’s restaurants with a special menu for the Festival and to complete the evening with a vast choice of the best malts of the Speyside.
- To have guided excursions or outdoor safari in the scenery of the Speyside and the National Park of Cairngorm.
- To assist to music, dance, exhibitions, bagpipes bands, auction sale of whisky bottles and the handicraft fair.
- To participate to the famous Drams Party, the conclusive event of the Festival, when it’s the time to say goodbye to old and new friends.
The Spirit of Speyside is very different from the Feis Ile, the festival of Islay. The whisky is different, the peat of the Speyside is “nearly” banished. The context of the Speyside is different, a vast area with nearly 50 active distilleries, compared to the little island of Islay with just 8 distilleries. The organization of the festival is also different, on Islay there’s every day an open day of just one distillery, in the Speyside there more events during the day. But the soul is the same: you can appreciate malts, get to know personally the protagonists of every distillery and make new friends, who come from all over the world.
There’s a little space left for few things about Islay, thanks to Robin Laing, Scottish folk singer-songwriter, author and writer of the official notes of tasting of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. He showed his new book “Whisky Legends of Islay”, a collection of stories – some surreal – collected through the years by Robin during his continue visits on Islay. It is easy to image how those legends came to life, during the cold and dark winter, with some drams of whisky as partners in crime, on Islay Island. The most famous story talks of ... Italy, as today on Islay there’s no cheese factory since the Pope excommunicated the one of the island, considered to have some devil aphrodisiac gift… C'è stato spazio anche per un poco di Islay, grazie a Robin Laing, cantautore folk Scozzese, scrittore ed autore delle note ufficiali di degustazione della Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
Another great festival, Dufftown we see us in May 2010. Maybe before..
